If you're buying a call or put option, the worst that happens is losing your entire premium—the money you paid upfront. Even if the option expires worthless, you never owe anything beyond that initial cost. Your loss has a hard ceiling.
Selling options tells a different story. Naked calls (selling without owning the stock) expose you to theoretically unlimited losses since stock prices can climb indefinitely. A naked put can tank all the way until the stock becomes worthless. This is exactly why brokers require the highest permission level before letting you sell uncovered options.
There's a middle path that caps your risk. Spreads work by pairing a sold option with a purchased one to lock in a maximum loss you know before you even enter the trade. For most people starting out, either buying options outright or using defined-risk spreads means you can see your worst-case scenario coming and avoid any surprise debts.
